First I was a longtime listener to KPFK, then a volunteer, and eventually non-union paid staff. I created a successful show – Another WorldView Is Possible, and was later elected to the LSB, twice.
I was also illegally (criminally) suspended from the LSB, twice – for whistleblowing on blatant criminality and malfeasance. Telling the truth, even about the shenanigans at KPFK, only earns you friends, amongst the well-informed audience. I resigned in disgust, as Democratic party stooges took control of the station, the network, and its governance – and then watched as they’ve run things into the ground, ever since. They hijacked the network, and destroyed a once significant audience, that I had helped to build.
Since then, I’ve mostly just stopped listening, and I’m not alone in that. I feel like I often know more BEFORE listening to some of KPFK’s shows, than I do afterwards. Disinformationalists have been elevated to prominence, and allowed to linger on our air, endlessly collecting paychecks, for driving the audience away. And make no mistakes about it, the malignant cabal that has ruined things over the past decade and more, wants to continue with that model – replacing listener-sponsors with Foundation funding – that compromises our mission-compliance and destroys what once made Pacifica a last bastion of truth, in a sea of corporate media lies.
Since I walked away from Pacifica, more than a decade ago, the malfeasance and cancerous ROT has only gotten worse. How many current PNB Directors, and LSB Members in the network, have exceeded their elected terms, and still remain, in violation of bylaws mandated term limits?
While “New Day” has promulgated the BIG LIE that democratic listener governance, and listener elections have brought Pacifica to ruin, that cannot possibly be the case. We had democratic processes and oversight, when our listenership and relevance were at their all-time peaks.
The problems at Pacifica are with compliance and fidelity to our bylaws and election rules. One slate wants to scrap our elections, and to pack our boards with hand-picked Democratic party hacks, who’ll vote as they’re told. Another slate wants to cheat in our elections, so they can install unqualified neophytes and political operatives – who’ll also vote as they’re told. We need a return to INDEPENDENT, conscientious governance, that places the mission and compliance with the bylaws ahead of political considerations, whether external or internal. The Bylaws require listener candidate statements to be played in ‘carts’, on-air, in a rotation, during times of significant listenership. How many have you heard, during this election?
The problems at Pacifica can be FIXED. But I can’t do it alone.

Doug Barnett, Your Number One Vote
Why has our KPFK-FM radio, LA’s source of alternative political analysis and the voice of people otherwise frozen out of for-profit media, the go-to place for peculiar music…. become one long info-commercial?
KPFK makes small mention of Volunteer programmers in the station who don’t get ANY wage, the station doesn’t buy them a restaurant lunch or pay them to attend Skill Growth Workshops.
They don’t get free parking unless a “Staff” member forgot to show up, their Union Rep doesn’t exist or won’t help past 13 weeks.
They’re not “professionals”, They don’t get ASKED about anything.
They get Told …., up until their last day, when they show up at the station and don’t get to go on ….,
And surprise, “Staff” didn’t have the guts to even tell them that their time slot has been moved A THIRD TIME or “That show has been replaced”.
Hill’s design and the original Pacifica Foundation (1948) were built so that broadcast Voices ran the radio station, not paid Mercenaries.
This station is not Community Radio, not NPR nor the CPB.
Pacifica is an EDUCATIONAL CORPORATION, not built around pushing our listeners needs or wants, and not our Staff’s “Good Fashion Sense”, resume Bling, or anyone’s “Ride”.
Printed in this paper I have right here: Washington, July 2 1964
“FCC slapped a whopping $4,000 fine on KALI-AM, San Gabriel, today for failing to originate its programing in that city.
Commission charged [the] KALI licensee depended instead on Los Angels origination.
FCC described the alleged violations as “repeated and willful.”
Quoting from the California Attorney General’s website,
June 2023:
“This is particularly the case if the corporation has little to no contact with the jurisdiction in which it was incorporated, and when vital California interests are at stake, such as protecting California residents from harmful conduct, including protecting the assets meant for California beneficiaries.”
Vote Number One for Doug Barnett!
And we must always remember;
Transparency and Ignore-once are VERBS, not adjectives.

Such are the days that Shall be.
But what are the deeds of today?
In the days of the years that we dwell in
that wear our lives away?
Why then,
And for what

We will it.
And what is the ferment
but the dreams

KPFK Candidate: #3 Aryana Gladney

Statement
Uhuru, All power to the people . My name is Mecca, also known to some as Aryana Gladney. I was born and raised in south central Los Angeles. I believe that from years of living and organizing all over LA have a good grasp of what’s happening. I have lived everywhere from Inglewood, Long Beach, to Watts and currently residing in Mid City. And I’m excited to be running again, for KPFK’s local station Board.
I feel that this time around I have more to offer since my role on the board in the past. This includes everything I have experienced and learned over the years. I’m a mother to a young adult. My son is 23 years old and my relationship with him keeps me grounded. It helps me to be in touch with the youth: how they feel, and what they are experiencing.
I have been grassroots organizing since 1997 when I joined the Black Riders Liberation Party. During that time my work was primarily focused on organizing to stop police terrorism and changing the gang mentality into a revolutionary mentality. Currently the majority of my work is organizing African Women.
I am a member of the Los Angeles branch of African National Women’s Organization (ANWO), a mass organization of the African People’s Socialist Party / Uhuru Movement created to address the special oppression of African Women. The African National Women’s Organization focuses on the elevation of women to the rightful place as equal partners and leaders in the forward motion of the development of human society, and as leaders, makers, and shapers of human history. One of the major campaigns of the ANWO is the #ArrestCPS campaign. The goal of our work is to expose the parasitic nature of the foster system and the devastating role it plays in the life of Black families. We want to see children returned to their homes and resources allocated by the state to go directly to the families, ensuring successful reunification.
The attacks on black families are reflected in the current and historical attacks on the struggle for self-determination and liberation of African (Black) and all oppressed people. The attacks on democratic rights of freedom of speech, organization and assembly as seen being waged against the leaders of the Uhuru Movement known as the Uhuru 3 who are facing federal indictments, and countless attacks being levied on activists and in this country and around the world, make the work of KPFK essential to inform the masses, expose the continued repression, and represent the voices of the people.
I would be honored to serve on the local station board. KPFK’s mission of peace, justice, equality and human rights, falls right in line with the work I have been doing over 20 years. If I am elected to the board I pledge to continue the ongoing effort to restore and extend grassroots accountability, creativity and effectiveness at KPFK.

Statement
I am Kelly Flores running for the LSB for the second time, with the Grassroots Community Radio Coalition. I want to help in whatever ways I can to keep KPFK for the community it serves and promote programming that reflects the voices of the people, especially communities of color in the struggle. I want to promote culturally relevant and responsive, liberatory and global perspectives that address the issues our communities face. We need better education and more creative space on air and continue to bring listeners back, and keep listeners connected. That is what public radio is for- one that is truly run by the people and for the people–and one that brings in the most marginalized and oppressed in our communities; and one that uplifts their voices and the beautiful music, poetry and art being created. KPFK should continue to be the station that holds that space and unites us.
To me, this station has given a voice to the community that hasn’t had a platform for decades. I began listening to the Spanish Language programming on air in the early 90’s and continue to do so today on a daily basis.
Over the past several years so many changes have negatively impacted the station and I want to help change that. We have financial constraints, and we need to find better and more creative ways to fundraise, increase membership, and listener support. I want to help do this.

KPFK Candidate: #6 Jack Neff
Statement
I am Jack Neff and KPFK radio works best when it broadcasts diverse voices providing censored news, critical education, and soul-stirring entertainment from a local and global perspective. I love KPFK because it gives voice to people from all walks of life, from perspectives which are directly engaged in the struggles for existence and dignity. KPFK and radio in general create solidarity for people living in our common struggle to get information, education, access to the big world around us and enjoy some entertainment.
KPFK is free radio, without broadcasting commercials. I appreciate listener-sponsors pay the bills at KPFK. It takes work to accomplish our mission within financial constraints. My job as a litigation paralegal has taught me to scrutinize various interests and to analyze financial documentation, to look at data critically, with a professional eye. Every situation is different, and the important elements are always the values of the people involved.
The KPFK Local Station Board (“LSB”) is a democratic committee created under the bylaws of the Pacifica Foundation National Board (“PNB”) so listener-sponsors and KPFK staff can be involved in KPFK decision-making. In Southern California 98% of the commercial radio market is about corporate-controlled for-profit messages. KPFK is the exception to media censorship and KPFK’s LSB should support the PNB mission of a not-for-profit radio station, listener-supported and independent.
Critical issues face KPFK and the country. KPFK listeners need information and KPFK needs revenue. I agree KPFK needs to attract new, younger listeners with younger voices driving for increased numbers of smaller pledges, driven by premiums from the Pacifica Archives.
Work and cooperation between management, the LSB and paid KFPK on-air staff are needed to create a wide-ranging publicity campaign to show the wide world of LA radio listeners that censored information, critical education, diverse analysis and shake-it-up entertainment are always there on KPFK. If a new publicity campaign can show that the world really needs KPFK and the PNB mission, the LSB is doing its job.
KPFK is an educational organization airing voices for peace, justice, liberation, self-inquiry, skepticism and real-time political struggles as they happen on live radio. KPFK is the only reliable radio media outlet giving regular air time to voices from incarcerated communities, the transportation-dependent, disabled, labor, feminists, Native-Americans, alternative cultures and to political progressive. KPFK is also changing the system by broadcasting censored voices in English and Spanish, which reflects the population realities of 2015 in Los Angeles. I love KPFK’s gumbo of programming which educates children, techno geeks, youth from various immigrant backgrounds and has music shows for almost every taste. KPFK’s website archive uploads programming on the internet for 60 days after broadcast, making KPFK unique radio. A publicity campaign should use KPFK’s website to bring round-the-clock, real-time live stream reporting from Southern California to the world.
I am with Grassroots Community Radio Coalition www.gcrc-socal.org I encourage listener-sponsors to vote for my fellow candidates. Please help make the LSB serve KPFK and our KPFK communities.

I am an avid KPFK listener, and promoter, since my college days at CSULB studying PoliSci/Latin American Affairs. It was the Ronald Raygun years, enough said…I have worked on issues of Peace, Latin America, Environment/Sustainability, and with Youth, for the past 30+ years. I adore the Spanish (righteous!) programming. I hope to promote KPFK to LA’s Youth, and to promote more radio from the street, and creative, mission-based fundraising that not only brings in more members, but furthers the mission of Peace and Justice that is Pacifica. I have been a Green Party member since 1992, and was then elected to the County Council at the age of 23. I ran for California State Assembly in 2018, and founded Berners Against Militarism and the Cold War Truth Commission, the later of which I am still actively building. I am a mom, a high school teacher and an urban farmer. One of my axioms is: Trust the Sun, Grow Food. LA, with all its problems, is RIPE to lead the state and country in sustainable human and environmental transformation. KPFK can be a major contributor to that effort.

I’m a lifetime listener of KPFK from the 60s until now. The programming I heard in the 60s and 70s help shape me into the person I am today. I hope to play a role in supplying Los Angeles with the ongoing great programming that KPFK has provided over the decades. I hope to assist in creating a stable and viable station that can help lead the independent thinkers of Los Angels to have enlightening programming to move our city in greener directions.
I am a retired LAUSD science and shop teacher, social justice and climate activist and union activist. As the UTLA chapter chair at my school for a decade I served on a monthly school based management council to help govern the school’s finances and schedules. As a teacher I spent my 30 years at VNHS building alternative Academy programs for “at risk” and “under performing” youth. I was active with the LAUSD East and supported two different teachers strikes. I worked with the union human rights committee and also was a strong supporter of bilingual education. I was the faculty advisor to many student clubs over the years including our MECha and BSU clubs.
I have spent the last couple of years working with the LA Climate Reality Project Curriculum committee to pass a LAUSD resolution to facilitate teaching more climate curriculum in every grade level and in every subject. After passing the resolution our committee continues the long and tedious journey of trying to get LAUSD to implement and fund all the parts of the resolution. We are also committed to sharing the best practices of climate curricula with other districts.
I am also lover of outdoor education and have authored a website (outdooreducationla.org) dedicated to utilizing outdoor spaces more with classroom visits. I am working as a board member of the SFV Audubon which besides enjoying bird watching spends a lot of effort on greening and protecting our natural environments. I work a couple days a week with the Santa Monica Mountains Resource Conservation district touring elementary school students around cool outdoor habitats. A good age for them to bond with the natural world around us.
I also have started a website called vegan95. It is a website that advocates being vegan at least 95% of the time in order to lessen the impact of domesticated animals on the environment. I’m very interested in the emergence of so many plant based food products in the last few years.
Como muchos californianos, tengo algunas raíces en México. Uno de mis abuelos nació en Sinaloa, México. Soy ciudadano estadounidense y mexicano. Me gusta el dicho de que una persona bilingüe vale por dos. Hablo Espanol.
I am active on social media sites; @cwilken , @ClimateCCom and @GPCandiate2024 on twitter. My Websites are Outdooreducationla.org and Vegan95.com

Statement
I am Rizo Saverio, born in Recife, Brazil. The idea of having something as wonderful as Pacific Radio-KPFK 90.7 FM, existing and flourishing and even celebrating 64 yrs is truly amazing. Back in the days when I was trying to figure how to maneuver in the halls of academia, KPFK dazzled me with interviews, live music, theater, etc… Late at night, Alan Watts always delighted and puzzled, talking of a gentle wisdom world where discerned thinking was pursued and desired. You could feel the keys to some ancient wisdom being passed on to you.
My Mom grew up on a farm in Northeast Brazil and my adoptive Father was an immigrant from Italy to Brazil. I am the first of my parents’ lines to make it to college. The concept of media without corporate power pushing its wishes on the public simply thrilled me from the first moment. It still does.
My classrooms at UCLA introduced me to the theories of change in society. KPFK gave me samples of how those changes intermingled, bumped into each other, fulminated and further brought on more challenges and changes. I was living Sociology and Psychology.
With Cesar Chaves and Dolores Huerta, I sang about grapes and lettuce…
I walked Hollywood Blvd with “Children of the Night”, girls and boys who survived by prostituting themselves, while living in a society that proclaimed to be “best in the world”. I hosted Blasé Bompane and his group in my little apartment in Santa Monica. I sat with Carlos Castaneda and a small group and talked for hours about his book and the “brujerias” he learned.
When I made a big mistake and my boyfriend wanted nothing to do with the responsibility of parenting what might develop, I was grateful that I did not have to drop out of college and become the next poor woman without resources.
I am running currently because I want Pacifica-KPFK to continue, offering exceptional programming, to influence other naive young people like I was.
Our community needs programs that touch the lives, the problems we have, and are there to celebrate our victories against the forces that would crush us. Thank you for giving me a chance to continue my affair with KPFK.
I appreciate your vote of support to serve the Local Station Board.

KPFK Candidate: # 10 Edward Fakes
Statement
My name is Edward Fakes. I was born in Los Banos, CA and my father died when I was two yrs old. My Mother and us nine children moved up and down Central California. Being the youngest, I was raised mostly by my older sisters and brothers.
About ten years ago I met a Lady, who constantly listens to Pacifica KPFK 90.7 FM. I then learned to listen by osmosis. I opened my eyes to all the politics behind the “nice” front we’re presented. Enlisted at seventeen years of age, I served in the Navy, stationed in Pearl Harbor. My discharge papers were given to me the day my ship left for Vietnam – probably the reason I’m still alive today.
Without graduating from High School, the “best” job I could find was in the refineries… But I realized much too late how I exchanged my health for “a pocket full of change”. I gave the best years of my life (30+) unaware of what choices and influences dictate what happens in our lives.
Still, I raised two boys and now have twin granddaughters from one of them. My other Son unmarried without children, is an elementary school teacher and travels all over the world every chance he gets.
I want to be with good forces that will guarantee that Pacifica KPFK 90.7 FM will continue to open the eyes and the hearts of those who want a world that works for all of us, not just for the privileged few.
I want to bring my living experience to the KPFK Board and collectively work with all to serve the best needs of the Station.
Thank you for your vote.

I believe I’m a unique staff candidate in this election. I am new to programming and staff, as I just began producing and hosting “Working Voices” labor show in May. However, I currently serve on the LSB as a listener. Unlike many of the LSB, I have been deeply involved at the local and national level for the past 5 years. I volunteer with the Outreach Committee canvassing at events and the in-person Town Hall. I was elected Secretary to the board and served for 2 years in that position. I then eventually joined the board. I have been a member of the local Finance Committee and reconstituted and chair the Fundraising Committee. The changeovers of the GM position recently made it difficult to implement many of the fundraising initiatives. However, I was able to reignite the phone-banking efforts (outreach to elapsed donors) and hold the online holiday auction last fall.
On the national level, I was elected in 2021 to both the PNB Audit Committee and the Elections Committee where I served as Lawrence Reyes’ Secretary. I organized and chaired the PNB Elections Committee Task Force to record that year’s election issues as well as advocate to the National Election Supervisor and the PNB for remedies. I was also elected LSB Treasurer by a strong majority this past December. I have not yet been allowed to participate at the PNB Finance Committee in that capacity, however I’m extremely comfortable in fiscal review and oversight.
I’m a union-member and work professionally in independent film as a producer. Strong storytelling that serves to empower its audience has been a huge part of my life. There was a need for KPFK to have a labor program. I have a passion and experience with worker’s rights. Being able to act on that need and create an on-air program organically seems only possible at a Pacifica station. My appreciation for the staff and programmers has deepened now that I’m working through challenges for the show myself (mechanics, research, promotion, etc.) The passion is palpable at the station and on-air. I’m honored to be a part of it – and would be honored to now use my skills and experience to represent the programmers & staff. I am very familiar with the procedures of the board and committees – as well as much of the politics and personalities. I know how to stand strong for our mission and bylaws, diverse programing, and work within the system to move forward on issues to benefit the staff & programmers, the station and foundation.
Please know that I will fight to keep our building and station intact – with our programming accessible to all communities. I’m dedicated to bringing all the passion and experience I have to protect the foundation and growing the station.
I greatly appreciate your support. Thank you –

Human beings transcend by their actions rather than by their words, there are exceptions, some writers who are remembered by their books and some singers make the world a wonderful place with their music, so it also happens that with some radio broadcasters, that their words are capable of influencing history itself, they can draw a tear or a moment of happiness or can trigger powerful movements of profound social change; KPFK is a collective voice capable of unleashing the transformative creativity of our community, feeding the conciseness of the workers, KPFK helps unify all races around a common goal regardless of color or creed, I am committed to this ideal in honor of those who are no longer with us but have left us their example. Ideas are discussed in our institution, we discuss the methods, but the historical objective is the same, developing the trench to the educational and cultural revolution as the counterweight to the corporate media.
I ask for your vote, for more than 20 years I have worked as a volunteer in KPFK knowing that the volunteer work liberates the human being since it does not force humans to be sold as if they were goods. Some objectives of my participation at KPFK Local Station Board. To promote more collective programming and to count with more volunteers who identify themselves with the project of Pacifica. Achieve greater harmony of the community through a program that serves listeners, decreasing radio expenses through having collective and individuals who contribute their time and effort to promote the radio and increase the existing membership.
Make community forums in different parts of the city to hear the voice of our radio listeners. Continue training workshops so that more people in the community work in the development of programming. As we have done and will continue doing workshops for paid and unpaid staff on the different regulations of the FCC, this with the intention that the producers of the programs avoid mistakes that could economically affect radio.
Promote greater support of Local station Board to programming, outreach and inclusion committees since these committees have great potential but their resources are limited. Finally, I believe it is very important to conduct meetings among volunteers and paid staff as well as with management to promote a greater understanding among us at KPFK, on the understanding that the Pacifica Foundation and our community of listeners is the avant-garde towards a future of fulfillment, and social harmony but at the same time a radio whose programming challenges the corporate media.
My proposal is a radio at the service of all the causes that love freedom and justice if you’re one of them join me!

I understand the challenges KPFK is facing from multiple perspectives and think that I can be a liaison between staff and programmers and help KPFK improve and build to maintain the 68 yr legacy it has built as the community radio station. It is important to remain a citadel of education and community and I intend to help make this a reality.
There is no reason why in Los Ángeles, one of the leading media markets in the world that KPFK should not be front and center, providing perspectives and educational access that is unparalleled by any neighboring radio station in all of CA. KPFK continues to lose audience due to easy fixes including a revamped website, and developing in kind donations to improve our technology and access to remain so. As a former staff person and volunteer I feel that I understand the challenges from multiple perspectives. I have broadcast training and experience through my master’s in media from UC Berkeley. I am also bilingual and can help continue to bridge Spanish content with the bilingual audience that exists in LA and nationwide. I would love to uphold the Pacifica radio mission and vision through action and welcome your support in order to make this a reality.
